The Burns cemetery is the final resting place of a family who journeyed from Cumberland County, Kentucky in the late 1880s and settled around Trenton. The family encounter tragedy from the beginning, the impact of which has rolled down the decades. Edward T Anderson</al> and Edna Laura Bell [Neighbors] Anderson</al> were among the many families moving from the regions of Kentucky and Tennessee to Northern Texas to fulfill the need there and in Oklahoma for railroad workers. The family moved into Fannin County around 1889 with Ed T</sa> working on the railroad as a section worker (occupation listed in the 1900 Fannin County Census). Their third son, Arvin Henry Anderson</sa> was born shortly before leaving Kentucky. The story told by her second son, William Jones Anderson</sa> (the author's father), was that his mother fell fatally ill to an epidemic, perhaps weakened by the birth of her last child and the long journey from Kentucky. Ed T</sa> was left with their three sons, James E</al>, William Jones</sa> and Arvin Henry</sa> ranging in age from 6 years to an infant.

Mary A [Thrasher] Anderson</al>, mother of Ed T</sa>, third wife and widow of James Anderson</sa> of Cumberland Co, KY, came from Kentucky and took William Jones</sa> (age 3 at the time) back to her home to raise until he was the age of 10. Around 1897, Ed T</sa> had remarried and now had a wife in the house to take care of his sons while he worked. So the three sons are shown reunited with their father in the 1900 census. William</sa>'s Grandmother, Mary A</sa>, widowed and no longer having any children remaining in Kentucky apparently decided to remain in Texas with her son and the grandson she had raised for the past 7 years. Mary Anderson</al> died in Sept 1904 at the age of 74. Tragedy continued when Ed T Anderson</al> was killed two years later on the railroad in May 1906. The three sons then split up and went their separate ways after the death of their father leaving their Grandmother, mother and father in the Burns cemetery.

The eldest son, James E</al>, stayed in Trenton and became a farmer, marrying Rose Lee Morris</al> and having two children; a son, John Edward Anderson</al>, and a daughter, Frances Dema Anderson</al>. Frances</sa> married Bill Hopper</al>, the couple having no children. John Edward</sa> married Fannie Bell Moore</sa> and had two sons by her - James Bradford Anderson</sa> and Euland Moore Anderson</sa>. John Edward</sa> enlisted in the Navy during World War II being initially assigned to the ill-fated cruiser, USS Indianapolis. But was reassigned to a destroyer before the cruiser's sinking. John Edward</al> and his second wife, Oneida</al>, had one child, Jerry Don Anderson</sa>. John Edward</al> and Oneida</al> also rest in the Burns Cemetery.

The middle son, William Jones</sa>, left the railroad work in Oklahoma drawn by the new boom of oil field work which he followed the rest of his life. He died in Kinder, Louisiana January 29, 1979. He fathered five children with three wives and steadfastly claimed he had no living relatives. The reason for this claim, which he clearly knew to be false, was never revealed.

Little is known about the youngest son, Arvin Henry Anderson</sa>. The family has one photograph of him taken in 1925. He appeared to drift from job to job in the Northern Counties of Texas until finally moving to Fort Stockton, Texas in the late 1930s where he remained until his death in April 1961.

All of the sons with the exception of Arvin</sa> have known descendants living to this day in Texas and Louisiana. Ed T</sa> had two sisters, Patsy 'Hettie' [Anderson] Vincent</sa> who married James Dowell Vincent</sa> and lived most of her adult life in Arkansas before moving to Texas. Sarah Caroline 'Betsy' Anderson</sa> married the brother of Ed T's</sa> second wife, Quincy [Hopson] Miller</sa> "Quincys</sa> brother was William W. Hopson</sa>. Sarah</sa> married William Hopson </sa> in 1899 after William's</sa> first wife Rebecca</sa> died. They had three sons before Sarah</sa> died in 1917 in Oklahoma. Ed</sa>, Patsy</sa> and Sarah</sa> have descendants in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Louisiana and Missouri" and undoubtedly elsewhere.

This recent discovery of the descendants of Sarah</sa> has now completed the search begun many years ago looking for our roots. The place that it all came together was in Fannin County, Texas near the small community of Trenton.

I am a grandson of Ed T</sa> and Laura Anderson</sa> who would have never discovered these ancestors had it not been for the hard work and kindness of Susan Hawkins and others who have enriched our family history. Thanks to her and others like her, we have found a number of cousins that I never knew of as a child. The record of Fannin interments was the key in doing this. Thanks, Susan!

Family of James M. CARLEN, HUGH: Hugh Carlen Killed</sa> -- Last Thursday night Deputy Sheriff Hugh Carlen</sa> was killed in an affray at Silver Point. George</sa> and Lon Murdock</sa> were arrested for the murder. It appears that Carlen</sa> had an execution against George Murdock</sa> and meeting him in the store of Walter Jones</sa> asked George</sa> to pay the balance due on the execution. Some words followed and witnesses say the Murdock</sa> boys attacked Carlen</sa> with knives, while Carlen</sa> drew his pistol and tried to strike Murdock</sa> with it, but dropped it on the floor. He then grabbed George Murdock</sa> and they fell to the floor, out of sight of witnesses, behind a counter. In the scuffle the pistol was shot once and Carlen</sa> fell with a bullet through the bowels. He was taken to his home and lived until early Saturday morning.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. Mr. Carlen</sa> leaves a wife and six children. He had been a deputy sheriff for several years and had the reputation of being a good officer. The Murdock</sa> brothers were arrested by Sheriff A. L. Weeks</sa> and given a hearing on Monday before Esq. J. R. Douglass</sa>, who bound them over on bond of $5,000 each which has not been made as yet.
